Three $4 Chardonnays Compared And Contrasted


Fan of chardonnay? Those who have read this newsletter for years know its author is a sommelier. I taste thousands of bottles of wine a year and have tasted a majority of the wine sold by County Line Liquors and now Albertsons Liquors. I rarely get the opportunity to sample inexpensive wines, mostly because the industry focuses on higher dollar products and does not pour these items or offer them as samples. The BOGO and 3Fer programs have always been Keven's pet project and his wisdom has proven to be exceptional. Last week I decided to buy three $4 chardonnays to taste, evaluate, and compare. I suspected these wines were good, but I was surprised at the quality for the price. Some might be skeptical, but I can assure you, these three wines are undervalued at $4 a bottle. Below are my notes from lightest to full bodied.
      Tisdale NV Chardonnay, California
This is a very Chablis-like chardonnay. Real Chablis (not the stuff in a box) comes from a region just west of Burgundy in France. Chablis is known for its lighter bodied, unoaked chardonnay. Tisdale Chardonnay is crisp and clean, offering flavors of pear and apple. This refreshing style has a touch of creaminess on the mid-palate. It has a very nice balance between ripe fruit and acidity. Soft and elegant, this chardonnay offers a lithe style with ample ripeness.
=>Tasted this wine the second night WITHOUT Vac-U-Vin or gas and found it to be slightly less vibrant, but still very tasty.

      Doubledog Dare NV Chardonnay, California
This chardonnay has a distinct citrus profile. A spicy canvas is filled with flavors of tangerine, grapefruit, lemongrass, and orange rind. This chardonnay really has an impressive mouthfeel. Prominent acidity creates a palate cleansing effect. A long finish shows more tangerine. This is a zesty little white.

      Donna Sol 2008 Chardonnay, California
Ooo-la-la, this is one exotic, lush chardonnay. When it was first poured, I detected a touch of something off-putting, but it quickly blew off. Complex and full bodied, I feel a touch of residual sugar on the front of my tongue. Layers of flavor show caramel, pineapple, pear nectar, anise, graphite, flan, and macadamia nuts. Its creamy profile is fat and oaky. If you are a fan of big Cali-chardonnay, this is a great wine for you. Good balance of acidity to rich character.
